CARS.COM — Volkswagen released teaser images of an all-electric, multi-purpose concept vehicle that looks like it could be an incarnation of VW’s famed Microbus though this isn’t the first time a VW concept tries to capture the nostalgia of its Microbus. Volkswagen says the latest concept in the family of I.D. electric vehicles forges links between the legendary origins of the Volkswagen brand and its future.

Set to debut at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, the concept is built on the same modular platform as the original Volkswagen I.D. and BUDD-e concepts, capable of underpinning multiple types of electric vehicles. This version uses two electric motors as an all-wheel-drive system and has fully autonomously driving capabilities. A steering wheel disappears into the dashboard during autonomous driving, which is guided by laser scanners, ultrasonic and radar sensors, and cameras.

More details will be announced closer to the auto show’s start on Jan. 8.
