Automakers make money off their customers when the latter buy their vehicles, finance them, and have maintenance and repair work done. But there are other untapped opportunities, which is why Volvo is joining other car companies that offer their own insurance with Volvo Car Insurance Services.

Volvo itself is not underwriting any policies in its new insurance product; rather, it’s collaborating with third-party providers, including The Hartford, Liberty Mutual, Nationwide, Progressive and Travelers. And since insurance companies typically offer discounts for bundled coverage, Volvo Car Insurance Services won’t just cover your Volvo: Policies for home and assorted specialty products can be bundled together, and the company is also offering umbrella coverage for an additional layer of safety.

No Volvo? No Problem

In fact, shoppers don’t even need to own a Volvo to apply for coverage through Volvo Car Insurance Services — though, presumably, the brand’s expertise in its own products means it’s a better fit for them. Volvo’s involvement in the claims process can also help owners ensure that genuine Volvo parts are used for repairs when possible.

Vehicle owners can compare policies and prices in the Volvo app or through the company’s website. The available providers vary depending on state, with Volvo Car Insurance Services initially rolling out in 18: Alabama, Arizona, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont and Wyoming. If all goes well, it’s likely more states will be added to that list in the coming months.
