The Honda Accord, long one of the best-selling passenger cars in the U.S., has lost some faithful customers to SUVs in recent years, but the redesigned 2018 models offer higher fuel economy than most crossovers at a time when pump prices are slowly rising.

Gas-only versions come with turbocharged 1.5- or 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines, but the Accord Hybrid is the fuel sipper of the lineup with EPA ratings of 47 mpg for city, highway and combined driving. In comparison, an Accord with a 1.5-liter turbo and a continuously variable automatic transmission has a combined city/highway rating of only 33 mpg.

  • The Accord Hybrid has a 12.8-gallon gas tank. With the national average for regular gas at $2.58 early Thursday, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report, filling the tank from empty would cost $33.02.
  • Gas-only Accords have a 14.8-gallon tank, so a fill-up would cost $38.18 based on the national average for regular.
  • An Accord Hybrid, though, would be able to travel 602 miles on one tank (using the EPA city/highway combined rating), while a gas-only Accord with the 1.5-liter engine could go just 488 miles.
  • The cost difference of filling the tanks narrows in Missouri, which AAA said had the lowest statewide average for regular at $2.29. It grows in states such as California (average price of $3.44) and Hawaii, where regular was going for $3.51, the highest in the land.

Pump prices rose in most states this past week as U.S. oil prices hit a six-week high of more than $65 and the Energy Information Administration said consumer demand for gasoline set a record high for March. AAA said the national average for regular rose 5 cents week over week and, at $2.58, was 29 cents higher than a year ago.

With this year’s redesign of the Accord, Honda dropped the V-6 engine and coupe body style that had been available in previous years, leaving a sleeker sedan body style available with an assortment of four-cylinder engines. Though other models have turbocharged engines, the hybrid uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder.
