With Improved Headlights, 2020-2019 Ram 1500 Crew Cabs Ace Safety Test

The 2020 Ram 1500 crew cab — as well as 2019 crew-cab models built after May 2019 — earned a Top Safety Pick Plus designation from crash-test-organization Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Top Safety Pick Plus is the institute's highest designation, and the Ram 1500 crew cab becomes the first full-size truck to earn the designation under the current standards set by the IIHS. The redesigned 2019 Ram didn't previously qualify for an award because all its headlights rated either poor or marginal.

To be awarded Top Safety Pick Plus, a vehicle must receive a score of good — on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal or poor — in six dynamic safety tests. Those are the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. Additionally, available front crash prevention technology must receive a score of superior or advanced (the lowest rating is basic, assuming a vehicle has front crash prevention technology) and a score of good — same scale as the six safety tests — for at least one available set of headlights.

The Ram 1500 crew cab, when equipped with its optional forward collision prevention system and adaptive LED projector headlights with high beam assist, earned the highest possible rating in every test. That means only Ram 1500 Laramie and Limited crew cabs qualify for the award because these features are not paired together on other trim levels, assuming buyers add the necessary options. All other headlights on the Ram rated marginal in this round of testing.

The only other truck of any size to earn an IIHS award under the current standards is the 2019 Honda Ridgeline crew cab, which qualified only for the Top Safety Pick award because of a rating of acceptable in the passenger-side small overlap front crash test. Other full-size pickups like the 2019 Ford F-150 (poor headlight ratings for crew and extended cabs) and 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab (poor headlight ratings and a marginal score for the passenger-side small overlap front crash test) miss out on any IIHS award.
