Used car issues masked on purchased vehicle

Below is my personal experience with Adventure Motor in KC. I am in CO and was looking for a 5th gen 4Runner for sometime. I had a friend who purchased his 2010 4Runner from Adventure Motors and had a good experience. So, when I found a 2011 4Runner in my price range, I decided to pursue it. Since I am out of state, I did internet research, asked questions and paid for an outside inspection before flying out. I saw the Car Fax which listed a few minor rear damage notes in it. I knew this and bought the car, so that is on me. I know more than your average car buyer; however, with that said, I do not know enough to do work on my own car or really get into anything. I arrived, and first noticed that many of the features listed on the web ad were not present including back up cam, sunroof, etc. I looked at photos and took a quick video tour before flying out, so that is also on me for not noticing; however, I do believe they copy and paste their descriptions as opposed to actually distinguishing between 4Runners, so confirm before travel or purchase. I took it for a test drive, it felt good, signed the purchase as is, and went on my merry way in September 2019. My concerns: As I am out of state, they had to process the title and send it to me. It was sent without a signature from the broker they got it from. So back and forth phone calls and mailing the title set my registration back a few weeks. Ok, not the end of the world and they reimbursed mail costs. About a month into owning it, I went to use the 4-wheel drive and come to find out the 4WD indicator lights do not come on. I contacted Michael about it, but he had never heard of that happening. The 4wd was functioning so I moved on. Then I hear a noise that is diagnosed as a cracked catalytic converter in October 2019. When I confronted Michael about this, he let me know someone sawziled the cat converters off many 4Runners on their lot and they replaced them. Damage that wasn't disclosed to me at time of purchase and seems to me that their replacement part is faulty. February 2020, the wheel starts shaking when braking so I have to replace the rotors and pads. Again... kind of seems like something they would catch in their thorough inspections listed on their website but fine. I put some nice snow tires on the 4Runner, and in April I notice there is some uneven wear on the inside tread of the two rear tires. When I take it in (to two different places), I come to find out that the rear end of the vehicle is bent, likely from an accident. I had to replace the rear differential and two snow tires to the tune of $4k. Because I had not been in any accidents and driven barely 7k miles, I felt confident that damage came with the vehicle. when I bought it. I have seen Adventure Motors rebuild rear differentials on their instagram, so I know they are well versed in 4Runners. Once again, something that should have come up in their thorough inspections. I called Michael, and without placing blame, asked if we could chat about it. He immediately went on the defense. I tried to put him in touch with my mechanics, sent him the alignment readings and estimate. I finally reached out with a list of my issues and asked if they would consider splitting the cost with me only to have it turned back on me and then they completely stopped responding. It would be inappropriate for me to avoid any responsibility. I chose to buy the vehicle and signed a "purchase as is" feeling comfortable with the information I got. They owed me nothing although in my personal opinion, good customer service would have been taking time to discuss the issues with my mechanics and consider splitting costs with me. I know someone who had a different experience, so maybe this is an isolated incident. If you buy from them, pour over the Car Fax (and maybe don't buy until you get more info on accidents), get an outside inspection, consider getting it on the alignment rack and pay for an in-depth inspection.

Doesn't stand by what they say.

Michael is a dishonest salesman. He will lie and say whatever he thinks you want to hear to get you in. Don't trust anything he has to say because he's only interested in one thing, making the sale at any cost.

Dealer response

Hey Bill! Thank you for your honest feedback! We want all of our customers to have a really good experience working with us and we are very sorry to hear that your experience was not a pleasant one. Would you mind clarifying on this specific situation rather than a generalized statement? We feel that your claims are contradictory to our company values and our integrity as a staff, however we are all human and make mistakes and would like to know what specific instance your are referring to so we can help fix the interaction. Our goal is to provide our customers with quality vehicles and quality assistance. We look forward to hearing from you soon! -Adventure Motors

Stay away

Definitely dont stand behind their word. Had a agreed upon sales price and I'm over three hours away. Secured the loan and asked for a purchase agreement to be sent over. They said "right away" only to email back 30 minutes later that they sold to someone else instead!!!

great service

I went in looking for an off road vehicle. Very friendly staff. Nice choice of vehicles. A fair price. No pressure sales I would recommend this place!

Weird experience

They were super nice but I’m pretty sure we’re definitely lying. Told me all about the person that brought in the vehicle, but on the car fax showed it had been purchased at auction. Seemed a little crazy to have a whole backstory especially when the records showed there wasn’t a person who traded in the vehicle. Disappointing.

No Thank You!!!

Totally caught the salesperson not being honest and trying to take advantage of me by saying one thing then totally changing their story when it suited them and I was having a problem.

Best Experience of all time

BLUF: Adventure motors is a fantastic dealer that I would recommend to anyone and everyone. Now to the specifics. I have always wanted a Toyota Tacoma, but I don't have much time to shop for the perfect car, and because I was only going to have a week off I decided to maximize my time with my family and I called Michael Fuller at Adventure Motors. Within a week of my commissioning him to buy a vehicle for me, I was looking at exactly what I had requested at a FAR lower price. Because I'm in the Coast Guard, I was unable to physically fly and see the car, but the service had been fantastic so far, so I bought the vehicle after viewing about 60 photos of it. I flew in three weeks later after Michael had put new tires and suspension on the pickup and was blown away. The quality of the work and the dedication to finding the perfect vehicle for ME was astounding. I had a tight budget and we fell well underneath it. My flight to Kansas City was delayed by 45 minutes, but Michael went to the shop and sold me the vehicle at ten pm. There are no dealers anywhere else that would do that. If you're in the market for an offroad toyota, please support this local business instead of buying from the market giants. You will not regret it.
