SOLD US A CAR THEN PROMPTLY SOLD IT SOMEONE ELSE

My wife and I saw a number of great reviews and decided to schedule a lunch-time test drive for a Honda CR-V with great mileage and a color that we were interested in. Our test drive experience was good - we indicated that we would like to buy the vehicle. Customers cannot perform a pre-qual check, so we applied for their financing. Our first red flag was when we were told "Oh, our website payment calculator is pretty old. Our rates now are higher than what is used on our website." Fine, we thought - let's see how much different it is. We have excellent credit and had 5K for deposit and were initially offered 8.8% with a whole bunch of warranty and vehicle protection add-ons - this rate was double the rate listed on the site. (CarMax offered us 6.25% for the same year, make, and model). Politely declining, i asked them to reconsider - they then came back with 6.29%, only keeping a $900 GAP insurance. Given that we liked the car and that the rate was now much closer, i agreed to the sale and asked how to initate pay - they indicated via bank check, cash, or debit card. I had to leave to return to my job, so I left the dealership just after 1pm (I had taken an long lunch for the test drive) with a verbal agreement on the sale and a handshake, and indicated I would be back after work ended at 4:45 pm with the bank check for payment. An hour after I left the dealership, I was told via text that the car was "just sold to another buyer who came in and test drove it." I cannot believe that we would shake hands and agree to an offer, and they would then sell the car from under me in less time than it took for me to get the bank check and return with the payment. I spoke with the manager on duty, who basically apologized but said that there was now "nothing he could do", as the couple who bought it was now into their own paperwork for the vehicle. We now have a credit application hit and no car. I feel like I've either been scammed or suckered - or both. Nice space, friendly attitude, but awful business relationship and customer building. Zero trust. We're done with them.
