Build quality is better than most. I have owned the Merc 560 SEL, Jag S Type, XJS V-12, and this out shines them all. Great car. Watch the timing tensioner and cooling system issues.

No 2 ways about it! The 540i has everything a respective car enthusiast needs, wants, or could ever dream of having in a sedan vehicle. Performance, looks & of course luxury. All in one semi compact car. A automotive masterminds greatest achievement. Period.....

BMW is a luxury vehicle line and this 540i is no different. It has held its value and style and looks and performs no differently now than it did in 2002. Smooth ride, quiet interior, leather all around - it?s just a wonderful car to drive.

THE 1997 - 2003 E39 5-SERIESThis 5-Series, called E39 by BMW, was offered in the US from 1997 through 2003. It's been called the "Best Car on Earth"and "Best Car Ever Tested in 60 years of Testing" by just about everyone who tests cars, even Consumer Reports. This simply is because it does everything well, all at the same time. It easily won every magazine's comparison tests. The BMW 540 has the smooth, silent and luxurious ride of a huge luxury car and has the nimble, agile handling of a small sports car. It has every luxury convenience imaginable, yet is small enough to park anywhere and retains plenty of room for all front and rear passengers. The V8 is very powerful, as well as being smooth and silent.

The one I bought was 15 years old and 190K plus miles already. It's been fantastically well taken care of, so I can not compare to other less well cared for examples. Mine could be in a showroom, as far as the interior and exterior shine. The car is smooth, and the pull is incredible on the highway. The V8 responds with a lusty growl when pushed, and the manual transmission gives you control of this. I recommend this without reservation, as long as you buy a well cared for example.

This BMW has aged well. Regular maintenance, even at over 130k miles, hasn't caused any major headaches, and remains far more fun to drive than any of the newer models I've driven lately.

I hated BMWs and their drivers. Now I am one. Why? Drive this car and find out. It is a blast to drive. Fun, fun, fun. It simply oozes down the road, is comfy and smooth as all get out. It out accelerates most everything you'll come across. You'll be amazed at how the power keeps coming on and on. Gets close to 30 mpg cruising at 80 mph (it's a v-8 mind you). Holds a ton a stuff in the trunk and has a real adult sized rear seat. This car will put a smile on your face every day. You'll look for reasons to drive it. If you have more than one car, you will always find a way to pick this one. . We use it for everything except off roading. Downside: flimsy cup holders. I bought mine when it was 4 years old. I haven't found another car that I would rather own and that includes Audi's and Benzes.

To really feel what a BmW is all about buy the 6 speed Sport Edition. If u dont drive a manual tranny learn how. On a Bmw it wont be easy but if u acheeve victory you'll be able to not only find out what a true BMW is all about but also drive any other car with a manual transmission after that. Trust me its totaly worth your effort.

The BMW 540 is one of the most exciting cars to drive -- it features head snapping accelleration and superior handling. I own the 540iT wagon and this hauler hauls! I have even taken it on the track and turned in respectible times. It is also a great grand touring car -- we have put in 13 hour driving days without feeling overly fatigued. It is quiet when cruising but offers that wonderful V8 growl when pushed. The main area of reliability concern is the cooling system. My car is on its fourth radiator in just under 90K miles. BMW cheaped out in combining plastic with alluminum in the design and they are prone to failure. Replacement radiators is a small price to pay for a car that makes me smile every time I drive it.
