Great performing car & love the body style, but...

I've got the 4.8is variant - essentially an "M" version w/o the formal badge (the badging didn't happen til a couple years later, but it was the first year they came out with the high performance / racing model SUV) That said, BMW did lots to this year's model X5. There were extensive performance upgrades ranging from the suspension, to braking, to the transmission and of course the engine- all these were not seen in other variants... but that also lent itself to a ton of performance related issues. As an example, the high performance air-suspension system works great... when it works. But due to the various sensor processes related to an active / dynamic suspension system, it has the tendency to trip a bunch of error codes. The upside is that many of the issues are well documented and discussed in the BMW forums. Figuring you have the time to do the research and/or your mechanic is inclined to work thru the diagnostics of this or the other performance related issues, you'll be fine. If not, and/or if you're not mechanically inclined, then I wouldn't recommend this version and would suggest something "easier" to maintain (race cars aren't for everyone). If you understand how performance vehicles can be higher maintenance and have its own quirks that need attention and you're ok with getting a laptop to log into the onboard computing systems, then you'll love this car like I do! In fact, if BMW would just build this exact same model, I'd buy another one today vs. any of the newer versions!

Do the maintenance - you'll have a real jewel

One heck of an automobile - keep up the maintenance and you will have no problems - the safety of this car is as good as it gets - I would highly recommend to anyone who wants a German made vehicle - it will last for many of miles head...

Fun to drive

The car is fun to drive. Very comfortable and pleanty of space. Be prepared to spend lots of money on the maintenance. Gas is not that great either. Otherwise car is very enjoyable

Can't get a better vehicle than this one!

I am happy for what I have paid, this car runs good, exterior and interior looks great. For a 2004, I believe this car looks new and well taken care of.

Get your wallet ready

Ive had my car for about 3 years and there hasn't been a single year that I haven't had more than one problem with my car. Some things are smaller, but still always expensive. 4 of my windows have broken (failed to roll up) and now I have 2 leaks that'll be another $1000. BMWs are great cars in their first 10 years, but then it all goes downhill! Interior is nice and has nice luxury features, but then there are other features (like cheap plastic buttons for air and heat that fall off) that BMW probably could've put more money into or used better material.

BimmerBummer

Trouble maker... I have had to put money into repairs already and have only owned it for 2 months now. They said "they know BMW's" and I would be happy with my decision to buy. Not a true story.
