Sporty Looks, Honda Dependability

Very large front seating area. Plenty wide and comfortable. Average 29-30 mpg with mostly highway driving. Car is styled very well, with simple yet sharp looks. Extremely reliable, with fluids being the only thing changed so far. Honda certifies cars that are 5 years old with 60k miles, that should tell you something. Just crossed the 100k mark and haven't spent anything except oil and fluid changes. The Accord is one of the most reliable cars on the road.

Underwhelmed

Bought this 2010 Accord with about 30,000 miles on it, now has over 136,000. At first, there was nothing to complain about, but that changed at about 80,000 miles. Started to hear a rattle when doing a cold start after the car had been sitting for a while. This would happen intermittently initially and became quite regular after a bit more time. Lasts about two seconds. Did the research and found that it is a known issue with the Variable Valve Timing Actuator. Called the dealer to see what could be done. Unfortunately, he said that it could be replaced but that it would likely go bad again since there is a design flaw in the part. I asked if Honda had any timeline for a permanent fix. They said no. Did further research and found others online with the same issues and responses from dealers. (Or replaced device only to have it go bad again.) Suspect it is due to inadequate lubrication retention or supply on startup, once oil pressure builds, there is no problem. Strike one. Next issue was that at about 90,000 miles, I noticed that oil consumption seemed a bit high. Received a recall notice from Honda that explained the issue. After calling and talking with the dealer, they indicated that consumption would have to be in excess of one quart per 1000 miles for Honda to cover the repairs. (Have always run high quality synthetic oil in this car and change the oil before the indicator requires it.) Kept track of the oil usage and it is about one quart per 1500 miles. (My 2000 Chevy Silverado with similar mileage uses no oil between changes.) So again, no help from the dealer and no help from Honda either. Strike two. The car at first was a great machine, but over time with such poor mechanical reliability and poor manufacturer commitment to fixing problems, I soon fell out of love. Have owned many other types of vehicles and had heard for so many years how wonderful Honda's are. Really wish that I felt that way... Not sure I will ever buy another Honda.

Reliability is the reason for choosing Honda

I have owned Honda vehicles for a majority of my life and the 2010 Accord held up to the organization's dependability and value. It has been safe, reliable and an overall great family vehicle. No mechanical or maintenance issues to require any extra expenses after 74,000 miles. Excellent ride through the city or on freeways.
