Pleasantly surprised based on test drive
I test drove various brands in the midsize category back in 2008. Popular Hondas, Toyotas, Nissans and Subarus did impress on the test drives. We've owned Fords, Chevys and Chryslers in prior years and didn't have a good ownership experience. Mitsubishis and Toyotas we had also previously owned were very good all around vehicles. The two VW beetles were uncommonly fun reliable and economical cars to own. Then came my chance to try the Hyundai brand, mainly due to the lengthy and industry leading warranties. 100k/10 yr was outstanding. I noticed the Sonata I drove was as pleasing or better on various levels and factors. The ride was supple, quiet, nimble and impressive on roadways and freeways. I liked the understated and uncluttered interior since it wasn't gaudy or pretentious. The clean flowing lines of the dash and console appealed to me right away. Roomier interior gave it a bigger feel than the competitors as well. More of a straightforward, no nonsense Germanic feel to it. I think it made a statement on a personal level to me and reflected who and what I am. It fit the bill quite simply put, perfectly. Now I negotiated a better price than comparable midsize cars from the other guys. Clearly impressed I purchased my first Hyundai. The 2008 Sonata GLS. It was a dressed up base model, someone had ordered but didn't qualify or like the terms of the loan. Perfect, I thought as I'd asked for a tan/beige which they didn't have on their lot. This was a dark blue, not a bad color that was my second choice. Considering the deal I worked out it was unquestionably the car for my personal needs. I did make an issue at the near end of color and lack of a sun roof. So, after a bit of haggling they made me an even better offer on this and a couple other Sonatas. In the end I thanked them after the wash and wax and drove away happier than I've been over the years with other purchases. Well the odometer has gone over the warranty as has the 10 years. Experts told me I was on solid ground if I kept it since it was rated solidly trouble free and made to last longer than the warranty. Today, it's got 110 k miles on the odometer and the only work I'd had done was Struts replaced with control arm bushings, radiator flush and a couple of hoses replaced due to minute dry wear cracks, not leaks. I felt she deserved this for being so very reliable with basic oil changes, filters and tires being the only maintenance done over the past decade. Wow! To me this is quite remarkable. She still rides and handles like the day I bought this car. I just love it! Probably among the best ones I've owned during my long years of ownership, if not the best perhaps. Hyundai has done a great job with reliable and fun cars to drive. They've come a very long way and are among the best in the industry based on my personal opinion as well as those of friends who are thrilled with theirs. My wife even bought a Santa Fe she loves even though she's not by any stretch a car buff by any definition. It's only a means to get around and to me it's a lot more than that, since I truly enjoy the driving experirience on so many levels. It's a keeper, for sure. Cheers!

Great
I live in Minnesota and this car always starts even if it's been sitting in -20 degree windchill for a few days. It's awesome. Accelerates great for a car in its class and its interior is very comfortable. I love driving it and it's been reliable so far up to 110,000 miles.

Among the most gratifying cars I've owned
I'm one that has owned 15 different cars in the past three decades. Lots to compare my 2.4 liter 4cyl Hyundai Sonata to. With currently over 107k mi. on the odometer I've had no issues, especially considering I've only done basic maintenance on it. A pleasure to drive by any standards it has the ride quality of a larger car. Despite that it handles very nicely for not being a sports version by any stretch. Granted most drivers I notice are much rougher on their cars than I am. You may call me a refined driver that gets the most out of his car w/o spoiling or pampering it. Consequently I get much more life out of my tires, brakes and engine in general. Even my batteries last 1 1/2 times longer than the rating calls for or when compared to the average driver. Guess my Dad taught me right, lol! I'm engaged in passing it down to my grandson, who I'm mentoring currently. Some of the things I think make for a good driver who can be a shining beacon on the road that others follow are as follows: After all safety checks are in place, make sure you have two ways to your destination engrained clearly in your mind. Let all of your weight bear down on the driver's seat, not partially on the steering wheel, like so many people do. E.g. I put memory foam under the steering wheel cover of my wife's car. The next day it looked kinda like with a grenade pattern on it. Haha! Relax and be confident! Don't gun the engine all the time but accelerate smoothly, efficiently and cautiously. Don't stomp on the brakes. There must be 2 steps to stopping sophisticatedly, if you will, ahem! Decelerate (let the car coast a bit) before you apply gentle pressure on the brake pedal. Not, directly or abruptly from accelerator ( aka. gas pedal ) to brake pedal making even the car 'shudder' ,so to speak. Panic stop perhaps on a rare occasion. Most do it every time they get behind the wheel. They even start the car rough,....brrrr! I mean how is that even possible in 'human hands' ? right? Passengers ought not to feel any jerky movement. If they have a full cup of water in the cup holder or hand, nary a drop should spill. The same applies when you take off smoothly. Remember, a safe and sophisticated driving style is a pleasure to emulate, so set the standards and be unlike most drivers out there. You should stand out for all the right reasons. I get plenty of accolades from passengers and friends when I'm driving. I'm the one who is usually the designated driver in the family or a group of people who go out partying or vacationing, locally or out of state. Back to the car itself. Very dependable, comfortable and a pleasure to drive. One of the best cars I've ever owned and I've owned lots over the years. Fit and finish is as good as it gets for a normal passenger car. Gas mileage is among the best I've experienced. However that's a number that is volatile depending on the driver, especially with in-town stop and go driving. I do not hesitate to recommend either the 6 banger or the 4 cylinder that I proudly own. Interior and exterior quality are top rate for a car in its class, and it does have that....Class, you may be surprised but it lies just below the skin. Try it! Cheers!
