Worst Car Mistake I Have Ever Made

I purchased this car used about 1-1/2 years ago. It had 26K miles on it then. 2 days ago, with just over 85K miles the engine is dead. It threw a rod. As I am the second owner, the 100K mile warranty they tout does not transfer to me (I knew this when purchased.) I have serviced the car regularly however do not have all the records as I usually had oil changed at most convenient spot at that time. Hyundai has been far less than helpful, and their general statements include "sorry", "unfortunately", "what do you want me to do about it." This repair will cost me $5,700 for a used engine. I was somewhat excited when they told me the roadside assistance was available to help with towing, or so I thought. I have found a repair shop that will be saving me quite a bit of money (still very very expensive.) Since I am not having the Hyundai dealership do the work, they will not pay for the towing. Hyundai has not offered a single penny to do anything to help me during this financially devastating situation. As it turns out, other websites list multiple complaints about the 2011 engine. Their have been over 100 engine complaints filed with the NHTSA. Please do your homework before purchasing this car. It is a real shame because it is very roomy, comfortable, and gets great gas mileage.

Good Car

I just purchased a white 2011 Hyundai Sonata on December 5th of 2014. I absolutely love it! I purchased it from Gordon Chevrolet on Roosevelt Blvd here in Philadelphia. My sales rep, Renato Da Silva was extremely helpful and made sure I drove off the lot with what I wanted. I would most definitely recommend that location and that sales rep to anyone who is looking for a car.

High Marks Car

Bought this car about 8 months ago this is a Special Edition Sonata Limited loaded to the hilt. Has Chrome side moldings and white bright halogen lights, led lights .Car ride is excellent/ i comte 70 miles daily and no problem whatsoever. Got the car with 12000 Miles and now have 28000. This is an eye turner car. and one of a kind.

Extremely disappointed

I wanted to leave my review because I feel that it is very important that everyone knows my experience with this car and brand. I bought this car new. Drove it off the dealership floor. At first, this car drives nice, has nice features, and looks nice. I felt that the safety rating was worth the money, since it was cheaper than other brands. Early on, and I mean, within the first 10000 miles, I got this really annoying sound in the front end that sounds like rattling. Second, they recalled the brake switch, which was why I couldn't get it to start with the push-button start on MULTIPLE occasions. I drive A LOT. I have put 87k miles on my car in 3 years. I drive 78 miles one way to work. This car is not cut out for interstate driving. I worked in town for a year and didn't have many issues. After a year of interstate driving, it's about went kaput. I began having trouble with slipping between gear shifts at 60k. The rattling in the front end got worse and the cruise would shut off for no reason. I'm a pretty busy person and don't have time to drive over an hour to the nearest dealership. However, it started slipping really bad and the check engine light came on every time it slipped. I became afraid because I drive way too much to have an unreliable car. I took it to the dealership and, at only 84000 miles, the transmission needed to be replaced. Really?!? My old Chevrolet s10 from 2003, that was my first car, has been driven all the way to Colorado with 150k miles on it, and still drives like a dream for my sister. The only thing I have ever had to do with it is replace the fuel pump. Now that the transmission has been replaced, I'm still having more issues with it. The same issues that I had before except worse. The transmission is slipping and jerking quite frequently. The vibration in the front end is worse than ever. They have looked at it multiple times and can't figure it out. I just want to get rid of this thing because, although my boyfriend insists that it gets me from point A to point B, I'm tired of paying payments on a car that isn't going to last. Just really consider the options when buying this car. Consider the xxxxxxand con's. Research other vehicles. I also want to add, my average gas mileage has never been over 30mpg. Disappointing for only a 4 cylinder. I hope this review helps you with this decision. I know the best days I will have with this car is the day I bought it and the day I sell it.

great car - unless you are a passenger

the car is great running, comfort, and styling. I had to ride shotgun and couldn't believe how low the seat is in comparison to the driver. Hyundai must lower it to get the better headroom measurement. Overall, great car.

There is no free lunch ...

My wife and I bought this car in 2011 because we believed it offered fair value for the money. There is, however, no free lunch ... the reason Huyndai is able to sell these cars at a price point lower than their competitors is because they spec lower grade parts throughout. The brakes went early and were expensive to replace. The repair shop joked that Hyundai is specing brakes the way printer companies spec ink; they give you just enough coating on the calipers and rotors to get you out the driveway. Parking brake wore out. I've driven cars for 300,000 km and the parking brakes never wore out! Front skirt is fragile, as are the clips holding it in place. Normal bumps against a curb result in either broken clips, or cracked skirt. Both our current Mazda and past Toyota were far more robust. Two skirts have had to be replaced in 2 years on the Sonata ... none in 30 years of driving other cars. It''s cheap material designed to look good and save costs. It simply doesn't stand up ... Rust after 24 months around windscreen and on rear trunk. No other car we've owned has been so susceptible to the normal dings of highway driveway. The autobody shop just shrugs and says, "yup, Hyundais rust." Inadequate paint coating ... it doesn't stand up. Horn in on warranty 4 times. Broken promise dealer to store winter tires for life of the car. Mileage is good but nowhere near so good as advertised. Just too much hassle; no good will from corporate; and a sleazy feeling dealer. We're ditching it now before the real roosters come home to roost. Shame, because they're nice looking and feeling cars.

Awesome Car

I test drove several cars before settling on the Sonata. Since it was a new model, I decided to lease it, just in case it turned out to be a dud. It's an amazing car for the price. I did not suffer from any of the commonly reported problems. The only maintenance I needed on this car was routine oil changes and air filters. The only issues I experienced were paint chips on the hood and impact scratches on the grill from road debris. I like this car so much, I turned it in for a 2014 Sonata, and I'm paying less!

Sonata is very disappointing!!

I leased my 2011 Sonata GLS brand new in March 2011, it had 7 miles on it. At 3500 miles a noise in the front of the car started and the dealer replaced the right front suspension, noise got worse! It took almost 3 months to get dealership to contact Hyundai engineer to find out what to do. Turns out it was an issue with the frame of the car. At 20000 miles the a/c stopped blowing and the dealership had to replace it. The driver window works when it wants to and dealership can not duplicate. The TPMS warning light comes on randomly driving down the interstate and dealership says this is normal, not a chance this is normal. At 50000 mikes my driver door lock went and and my cruise control turns itself off, that is if you can even get it to set and dealership says can not duplicate. The wind house is horrible and the car pulls to the left constantly. Getting ready to trade this thing in for a new Accord! I have owned Hyundai's before this one and had no problems. My car also likes to blow fuses for no reason!!

Outstanding Vehicle !!!

I purchased this 2011 used Sonata for a very great price. I always liked the styling so I had a high interest when my daily driver crapped out. So purchased the car and have been pleased with the ride ,handling and comfort of this vehicle. But the one thing I really feel in love with is the gas mileage . It is outstanding. I recommend this car to anyone in the market for a quality mid sized sedan.

Never again

Bought 2011 Sonata turbo when it first came out. I cannot take a long trip with this vehicle. It literally breaks down every time I go on a long trip. Multiple recalls, break downs, and just plain unreliablabilty for a nice looking car. That's the disappointing part of owning this car, it looks good but not reliable. Stay far away....2 turbo issues, car start button not working(multiple recalls), dead battery, car pulling to left, bad stereo, rims very soft scratch real easy, paint peeling.
