Comfortable but Unreliable

The most comfortable, luxurious car I have ever owned, but also the most costly. I bought this 2001 S600 used in 2012 with only 63,000 miles on it. It was in great mechanical and cosmetic condition. The owner extolled its virtues and bragged that it had once belonged to a billionaire, hence the fantastic condition. Everything he said was true. Little did I know, however, that this car was a thoroughbred that required LOTS of upkeep. The first thing to fail was the ABC hydraulic suspension system. Pricetag: $4,000. Next was the alternator. Simple, right? No. It practically required them to remove the engine to get to it. The car ate tires as well as fuel (as expected), V-12 service cost nearly a grand and an oil changes were $250 each. When the hydraulics failed for the second time, I sold that car as fast as I could for whatever I could get. If only I had gotten the V-8...

S500

My wife loves it; she says she won't drive any other car. She will trade up for a newer S in few years

2001 S55 - Great car, great value, great fun

The S55 has to be among the best cars for the price in its day and perhaps even today. Original price over 100k with used ones hovering below 20k, it has all creature comforts to keep driver, family, and friends happy. The front heated/ventilated seats are great all year round. The rear heated seats are great in the winter months, even early Southern California mornings. Find the right set of tires and this car is seriously fast and smooth. Might be best to stay clear of the tires rated below 200 type tread "hardness", you'll go through a set of rear tires just about every year. The torque and horsepower combination truly propel you straight ahead, this car sparks excitement. It is surprisingly nimble, zipping through highway lanes and city traffic effectvely. It is thoroughly comfortable. This is a heavy car, gas mileage with this weight and engine will be comparable to a SUV, so temper your expecations. In my view, it's worth every penny. If you work hard for things in life, want to treat yourself to a well balanced car design that you'll enjoy for some time; consider a test drive, then take this car home; you will not regret this decision.

Style with Power and Reliability

The 2001 S55 AMG has been almost perfect and it is a kick to know that you are driving a real luxury car at a significantly discounted price. The torque and power provide great comfort with all the speed you can ever need. Stylish, comfortable, great trunk space and most importantly, reliable. I can afford a new car but the car has given no reason to want to let it go.

Comfortable, Curvy & Quick

This 2001 S55 AMG in designo Silver over Shell Napa, is the sixth MB that I have owned over the past 25 years, and shares the garage with two E320's, a wagon and a sedan. Acquired late last year, this car continues to impress me with its handling, power and outstanding comfort, certainly being the finest MB I have owned to date. With acceleration rivaling some of the world's best sports sedans and coupes, this 5.4l V8 delivers long wheelbase ride comfort for the long haul and the excitement of a sports sedan handling with 23+mpg on the highway. Find a used 00-02 S for under $20k and you will not be disappointed.

Best Used Car Performance Value around

The best way to purchase a great car is to look at a manufacturers high performance offering and buy one after the early years depreciation has been taken. The S55 is just one car. Retailing at over 100K new, you can find one with 50K miles or less and buy one for a lot less than a mid range luxury car, brand new. My experience with the S55 has been solid and the car runs like it was new. Lots of horsepower, classic styling, and tons of interior amenities make this a prestigious car to own and great fun to drive. You won't find to many cars with the back space room as one of these S-Class cars. The kids especially like the additional room and really enjoy the seat warmers. My S55 has just over 50K miles and have only needed to perform a brake job. I have had no mechanical issues and the car runs as quiet and straight as the day it was made. The interior is made of high grade leather and the seats are infinitely adjustable to accomodate virtually any size. Many new cars have electronics that are difficult to use. The S55 has a large color Plasma screen that makes all functions easy to see and use. The navigation system is particularly useful even if you think you won't need directions to run around town. I'm always looking for local addresses and now I just punch them in and let the nav system tell me how to get there. With highschool kids, you know what I mean. The car handles extremely well for a large car and with a nice set of 4 winter tires, the weight of the car will make winter snow travel a breeze. Gas mileage isn't great but its better than an SUV. This is probably the most comfortable car I have ever driven and certainly if you are over 6 foot 4 tall you will appreciate the leg room. The trunk is large and spacious and allows you to carry a lot of cargo if you should find the need. Complete that with a full size spare. You can't beat the styling and you will find that driving a Mercedes S55 is just plain fun and makes you feel like you have arrived. No one will have to know that you can buy a late model with low miles for under 40K. With the new body style out in 2006, the older body style is even more of a bargain. Add some cool wheels and you will have yourself a top shelf ride.

This is an awesome car

This car has more options than i knew was available! The paint and interior is perfect. Tires are new! Sound system is to die for!!! The ventilated seats allow the air conditioning to cool you off. Never saw them for the rear seats before, other than the 600 model. This is a steel for the price.
