Buick will address a major complaint among owners of its Rendezvous sport utility vehicle — lack of power — when it adds the new 2004 Rendezvous Ultra to its SUV lineup in January.

The range-topping Rendezvous Ultra will feature a new twin-cam 3.6-liter V-6 engine with variable valve timing, mated to a familiar four-speed automatic transmission. The 3.6-liter six makes 245 horsepower, a significant jump from the 185 horsepower generated by the pushrod 3.4-liter V-6 in the base Rendezvous.

The Ultra edition gets a monochromatic exterior paint scheme with color-keyed grille and bright chrome accents. Inside, the cabin is trimmed in leather, suede and wood, and fitted with two rows of captain’s chairs and a third-row bench. A wood steering wheel frames chrome-rimmed gauges. XM satellite radio and an OnStar communications system are part of the package.

Buick also will offer such features as a GPS navigation system, DVD rear-seat entertainment system, automatic level control, ultrasonic rear park assist and head-up instrument display.

Prices are expected to start around $32,000.
