(uplifting music) Hi, I'm Kelsey Mays for cars.com, here at the 2013 LA Auto Show. looking at Lincoln's all new MKC, small SUV. It's a spitting image of the MKC concept shown at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, but there are a number of important changes.
We'll show you more. The MKC shares its platform with the Ford Escape. Lincoln is Ford's luxury division. Not very many visual similarities, though. It trades Lincoln's former waterfall grill for a winged grill here with veins that kind of extend outward, similar to those on the MKZ Sedan. Under the hood, a two-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder good for 240 horsepower. Or a 2.3-liter turbo, four-cylinder, a new engine now good for 275 horsepower. We don't know EPA mileage figures yet, those are still pending. But the Escape with its two-liter turbo, four-cylinder gets EPA combined city highway figures in the mid twenties. So we'll see how the MKC turns out. The name of the game in terms of small luxury SUVs has to be cabin quality because you have to justify buying the Lincoln version, instead of the Ford. I gotta say the MKC definitely delivers here. Lots of soft-padded materials here, including padding all the way down this center console right here. French stitched leather, Lincoln says, they're stitching up above the instrument panel here along the doors. There's cross stitching, not anything hard you're touching along here. All very good cues for a luxury SUV and plenty of luxury features here in this car on the Auto Show floor. You've got things like heated and cooled seats, a power tilt telescoping steering wheel, lots of good things there. Right here, we have real buttons again. This is pretty incredible. Lincoln has had a MyLincoln touch system. It's kind of a parallel to Ford's MyFord touch system with capacitive controls. The automaker has received more criticism than Michael Bay got after "Pearl Harbor." And because of that and other reasons, Lincoln has gone back to physical buttons here. We really think that's a good idea. Nice job, Lincoln. Let's get in the back seat and check it out. Materials, stay consistent in back here. You don't see it coming back to a harder plastics back here. Still, real wood trim in this car at the Auto Show, a nice textured approach there. Things like heated rear seats, definitely up the features. A little bit tight in terms of space. I'm six feet tall, that's where I would sit to drive and you can see my knees are a little bit short on room behind the front seats. Also, the seat sits kind of low to the ground here. It doesn't adjust forward and backward, but it does recline here a few degrees, in a 60-40 split. Various Ford and Lincoln vehicles have a self parking option. The MKC takes it to another level with what Lincoln calls a park out optional feature. That actually helps you get out of tight parking spots. Usually front parking sensors can help accomplish just that. We'll have to drive this and see how it really does in the real world. Ford sells about as many Mustangs sports cars as its entire Lincoln division. Safe to say that Lincoln needs to sell more cars like Rob Ford needs to make better decisions. But the MKC should help the larger MKX SUV takes on the likes of the Lexus RX Luxury SUV, a very popular car, while the MKC will take on smaller SUVs, like the BMW X one, the Buick Encore. Both of those have been selling pretty well since they came out, so there should be a market for this SUV. We'll have to wait and see how it does after it goes on sale in summer 2014.
