(hood slams) (seat belt clicks) (upbeat music) (tires screeching) I'm Aaron Bragman for cars.com here at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Next to me is the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S 600.
This is the fourth model in Mercedes-Benz S-Class lineups so far, it joins the V8 powered S 550, the V8 powered S 63 AMG and the V12 powered S 65 AMG. Now this is the top luxury V12 model, and it is loaded with technology, some of which you frankly, might not even believe. From a style standpoint, the S 600 doesn't look all that much different than your normal S-Class. For North America, we only get the long wheel base version, which is fine. Considering this typically used as an executive transport. Long flowing lines really looks good. It keeps with the Mercedes-Benz design heritage that they're starting to really filter in through the rest of the lineup. The S 600 comes with a Mercedes-Benz twin turbo V12. It's a six liter unit this year instead of five and a half, like it was in the last model. It makes 523 horsepower and 621 pound feet of torque. Those are massive numbers. You're talking about almost the same amount of torque as you'd get in a diesel pickup. Of course, the diesel pickup has to haul all kinds of things around, this really only has to haul a lightweight aluminum frame, which means it's hauling something else. Mmm, I tell you, nothing makes you feel as relaxed or underpaid as sitting in the back of a flagship German luxury car. And this one, frankly, is one of the best. You would not believe some of the technology that they have in this thing up to about 37 miles an hour, the car can almost drive itself, stop and go traffic steering you basically down the highway. It's really quite extraordinary. There's a touch pad in the front console that lets you control all of the telematics systems, the infotainment systems, all those buzzwords systems of the car, basically radio, navigation, like it's an actual smartphone. Beyond that, you've got quilted leather, the Desenio interior that adds a nice touch of flair, real wood, real aluminum trim in here. The Burmester high-end sound system with the grills that frankly look a little bit like a speaker drain. Other than that, there's really not much more you could ask for in this car. It's got everything. Two of the more extraordinary features of the S 600, one of them is the heads up display that comes standard with the S 600. It features all of the data that you need to drive the car speed, navigation, turning direction, just like frankly, a fighter jet and the other is magic body control. Now that sounds like a great big buzzword, but what it actually does is it uses a system of cameras and sensors to keep the car level over things like speed bumps. You can actually hit a speed bump or a speed table at about 30 miles an hour, and you won't even feel it in the car. It just rolls right over. The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S 600 goes on sale in the spring of 2014. No pricing has yet been announced, but the car last time cost about $160,000. That's quite a lot of money, but it pretty much comes loaded. You can read more about the S 600 on cars.com. From the north American International Auto Show in Detroit, I'm Aaron Bragman.
