(engine revving) If you're looking for a small urban runabout, the Chevrolet Spark has been a possibility for a few years now, but Chevy has redesigned its global small car. We're here at the auto show with the second generation of the Spark.
Let's see if it is as electrifying as its name suggests. The Spark is still a very small car. Overall height actually is down a little bit versus the prior generation, and wheel base has been increased a little tiny bit for more cabin room. Definitely a sweeping redesign that affects the front most clearly. Much more of a grown up look here. Now we've seen aspects of Hyundai, Toyota, even a little bit of Volkswagen up here, but definitely a better look overall for this Spark versus its predecessor, which kind of had a little bit of an insect-like, bug eyed appearance. The redesigned interior of the Spark features a big center stack. It really kind of features prominently in the center part of this dashboard. A seven inch MyLink, that's Chevrolet's multimedia system, touchscreen here is standard. Now includes a backup camera as well. Now, overall materials, as you'd expect for kind of an entry-level car, they're fairly basic, but there's kind of a nice, interesting texture on the dash. It doesn't make it seem too shiny. It gives kind of a muted tone. And there's some creative use of colors inside the car. You get some painted panels here, like you did in the old Spark, that can sort of add some vibrancy around you. Space, now there's a nice hollowed out area here below the center stack that actually allows your knees to kind of spill into, so it's not too bad there. Looking out the back here, rear head restraints nest in the seats like they used to. That clears up space very well right behind you. But again, like the old Spark, still door handles in the back of the rear doors. Kind of make those C pillars seem a little bit thick, hurt some of your over the shoulder blind spot visibility. Now adults will find the backseat adequate in terms of space, but if you're planning on loading up on cargo often, you're gonna want to find a bigger hatchback. There's just not a ton of space behind these seats, and folding them down is a process that really sucks. You gotta tumble these seats forward first and then get the head restraints down if they're up, and then put these cushions down. And if you really want to get the seat all the way down, you gotta come and move the front seats forward a little bit to score enough clearance here, which then gets this forward and moves the seat all the way down. It was a mess in the prior generation of the Spark. It remains one here. The big question for any small car is fuel economy. We've heard that highway gas mileage on the Chevy Spark, this is from Chevy officials, should be right around 40 miles per gallon or so, but final EPA numbers and that all important combined figure still to be determined. So stay tuned to cars.com for more news on that closer to the Chevy Spark's on sale date in late 2015. (trunk slamming)
