(car engine starting) In the recent cars.com V8 Muscle Car Challenge, The winner was the Chevrolet Camaro SS. Now, as one of the judges in that contest, I was disappointed in the court's decision.
So I'm going to deliver the dissenting opinion and make a case for my winner, the 2016 Ford Mustang GT. (car accelerating) Here's where the GT is better than the SS, in my estimation. First, the braking, the brake pedal has better feel and linearity than the Camaro. I think the Camaro is actually poor in this regard, below average. It does stop in shorter distance than the Mustang, but most cars on the road take more distance than the Mustang and they're safe and livable. It is the actual breaking experience and pedal field that you live with every day. Second is the shifter. There's no question the GT had a little trouble getting off the line at the drag strip because of wheel hop, and the Camaro does have more power overall. But the Mustang has the best shifter. And one thing it doesn't have is the infernal skip shift feature that's on the Camaro. That forces you, in some conditions, to go from first gear to fourth, instead of second. That features an abomination. It always has been. I'm disqualifying the Camaro, end of story. Third is roominess and comfort. The Mustang is not as big as the Challenger, in that regard, but it's certainly comfortable, plenty of headroom and leg room. I'm not even back all the way. Unfortunately, in the challenge, our car had the optional Recaro Sports seats instead of the regular ones here. The GT took a pounding for that in the scoring because those seats give up all, but the most basic adjustments, they might be comfortable for someone, but it wasn't any of our editors. You're better off saving 1600 bucks sticking with the regular seats, which have more adjustments than the Camaro's, including this one, adjustable head restraint. In the Camaro, I found the head restraint too far forward, especially when I had a helmet on. The Camaro, as it relates to fit and roominess, is kind of appalling. One of our six foot tall editors, who's taller in the torso, couldn't even get in the car with a regulation helmet on. Overall, The shape of that car makes it too snug, and then there's what it does to visibility, which brings us to number four. The Mustang has the best outward visibility in all directions. Better even than the Dodge Challenger to the rear. The Camaro is actually known for having bad rear visibility, but it's also pretty dreadful looking forward. And it's not just about the low roof line. The gauge hood is quite high. The A pillars are fat and right in your line of view, if there are elevation changes, it can be a real hazard. And that compromises one of the supposed advantages of the Camaro. And that is it's track performance. How did Chevrolet redesign the car just a year ago and not address these problems? Well, they say they asked owners, and owners didn't have a problem with it. So what we're saying is, people who bought the car, like the car. Shouldn't they have talked to people who didn't buy the car, and asked them why? I absolutely agree that the Camaro SS is technically more proficient and potentially faster on a racetrack. But on the other hand, the handling of the Mustang GT is quite good, a little bit rough around the edges, but I, and some of the other judges, thought that made it more fun to drive. Which muscle car is your winner will depend on your definition of "muscle car" and what you expect. I want a muscle car to have a fair amount of muscle, iconic styling. I want it to be fun to drive and livable from day to day, I say, leave the absolute best track performance and whatever drawbacks may come with that to the sports cars, not the muscle cars. I actually think Ford has gotten the balance perfect in the current Mustang. Actually, if it gets any slicker in the future, I might lose my love for it. But for now my winner is the Ford Mustang GT. (soft rock music) (trunk slamming shut)
