(car engine switching on) Remember the Toyota Matrix hatchback? Well Toyota brought it back, except it's recast the car under its Scion Youth Oriented division. And here it's now called the iM. Well we're here at the auto show.
It's just been introduced. And I got to say, I am ready to take a closer look. Come with me. Now, the iM actually doesn't have a platform that's based on the Corolla. It's based on the current generation Scion TC. Very sporty aggressive profile, as you come up front here. Kind of a wedge shape as it descends here toward the front, with a lot of kind of bumper flares at the bottom, some ground effects here on the car at the auto show. 17 Inch alloy wheels are standard. In fact there's a lot going on, very Japanese styling a lot of creases, and kind of flared out elements there. It gives the car kind of a sporty econo car look. Pretty familiar dashboard themes, if you've been in a small Toyota lately. A combination of kind of stacked, and layered appearances here. For a small car, again, pretty good cabin quality. I got to say, Toyota's moving in the right direction here with its Scion division. Things like padding here along the upper part of the doors where your arms and your elbows land, even fabric along the A pillar. Pretty nice stuff we're seeing here in the car at the auto show though, bear in mind, a lot of materials change between the auto show car, and what actually shows up in showrooms. Now, a lot of standard features in the iM. Things like standard dual zone automatic climate control, a seven Inch dashboard screen here. Bluetooth, a backup camera. Scion says all of those things will be standard. And some interesting kind of storage features up here too. There's this big cubby here that doesn't look very big, it's ahead of the gearshift but it's actually really deep. You can throw an entire smartphone in there, it just fits in like that. Now Scion says the small four cylinder engine in the iM makes a pretty good 32 miles per gallon, and EPA combined ratings with the automatic. Given all the standard features, pretty good news that Scion says the iM, will start at right around $20,000. Shoppers will get a crack at it once it goes on sale in late 2015. (car trunk closing)
