(car engine sputters) There's a rash of new luxury sedans in that 50 to $70,000 space to compete with established German nameplates and, believe it or not, the new Lincoln Continental is one of the better ones.
We've got three reasons for you to check it out. First reason is styling. Now Lincoln's been in a little bit of the styling wilderness recently, but the Continental seems to be charting its way out. First of all, it's big, more than 200 inches long, closer to a full size sedan than the mid-sized ones that similar money will get you from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes Benz. It's also a very horizontal approach here just in terms of the beltline, the overall profile of the car. Very assertive, it really sets itself apart from the other stuff out there. Check out how this line just runs across here, just comes up slightly as you get over the rear fenders. Even the window moldings here, they incorporate the door handles themselves, these electronic door handles. Very cool stuff right there. Now some editors think that the rear looks a little bit frumpy in how it descends, but I gotta say these tail lights, the way they stretch across the whole rear end of the car, again very distinctive, sets the Continental apart. Now the second reason to check out the Continental is this interior, which is both handsome and functional. Now that flat profile outside does limit some visibility on the inside, what with squat windows around you, but that's really the only major drawback. Cabin materials are flagship car nice, with uniform padding and graining all the way down even into obscure areas, and glove-soft leather here in our test car even with individually adjustable thigh bolsters. A useful feature actually and you don't lose any practicality that way. You still get lots of usable, easily accessible storage areas. There's physical controls here with must-have volume and tuning knobs for the stereo and the multimedia system. Just a cinch to use. Third reason is how it drives. Now the Continental is a comfort oriented cruiser but with the available three liter turbocharged V6 it's a very speedy one. Our test car has that and there's just a degree of accelerator response that just gets intoxicating. It'll turn you into a leadfoot just for the sheer thrill of it. Lincoln's been a bit player in the luxury market for years, the last Lincoln you might remember is the town car that picked you up at the airport, but the Continental is a step in the right direction for the brand and it's certainly worth a look among luxury sedan shoppers.
