With the Scion brand eighty-sixed earlier this year, Toyota is unveiling the 86 at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. The erstwhile Scion FR-S isn't just getting a new badge and a name, but groovier, edgier exterior styling, too.

(car engine) With the untimely demise of it's youth oriented Scion brand, Toyota had to bring a few former Scions on board. One of them, formerly the Scion FRS now adopts a historic name plate with the return of the Toyota 86. So what's in a name.
Well, Toyota is called the Scion FRS, the Toyota 86 in international markets, it's a throwback to the AE86 generation of the Corolla, which like the FRS was also a front engine, rear drive, two door sports car. Now the changes go further than just the name. The lower grill here really fans out now to kind of where the old FRS's fog lights used to be. There's these inserts right here, they kind of just sit along the bumper. You get new headlights, new tail lights have redesigned reflectors. They give the car a little bit more visual width and the rear bumper has been redesigned. Though, the lower insert with it's dual big tailpipes still remains. Now the 86 essentially carries over the FRS's interior with a few minor changes. Things like this sort of suede like insert over the center part of the dashboard. Now this auto show car is an automatic, but if you get a proper stick shift, power's actually up five horsepower, five pounds feet of torque. Now 205 horsepower, 156 pounds feet of torque, thanks to some revised intake and reduced friction. Now the 86, like the FRS, comes essentially in one trim level with cloth seats so you can't dial it up with leather, dual zone climate control stuff that you can get in the Subaru BRZ, which is the 86's corporate twin. Stay tuned for pricing. It should come closer to the 86's on sale date this fall. (trunk slams)
