(car engine starting) The totally redesigned Chevrolet Equinox is lighter and smaller than its predecessor to more directly compete with heavy hitters like the Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4.
We're here with an exclusive video first look you can only find on cars.com. A lot of the same design cues now as other Chevy models: cars like the Malibu, the Cruze, the Volt. The biggest change here, the headlights and the tail lights. Both of them are much more horizontal, much more sleek than the more vertical headlights and taillights on the old Equinox. Still a lot of the old Equinox's sort of chunky profile, some carry over cues, things like a sloped forward c pillars. But a smaller package overall. More than four inches shorter GM says, and about 400 pounds lighter. Inside there's a lot more Malibu going on here with a very cohesively designed a dashboard. No longer kind of a cluster of buttons here in this waterfall center stack like you had in the old Equinox. Very car-like. But still lots of SUV-like storage. Things like plenty of storage here in the center console, a nice big bin here ahead of the cup holders. Now a couple drawbacks we found. It seems, these seats seem a little bit smaller. That was actually one of the best features in the old Equinox: big, big seats. Not quite the same here. And blind spots still pretty significant here. That was kind of an issue in the old Equinox. Still with these pretty thick C and D pillars, it doesn't seem like GM's really cleared that up. Like the old Equinox, still a large back seat with a nice high seating position, though it no longer slides forward and backward like the old Equinox's seat did. Fold the seats down, about 64 cubic feet of maximum cargo room. Still a little low for the segment when cars like the RAV4 and CR-V get into the low seventies. That said the new Equinox comes at a great time for GM because consumer demand for small SUVs is very high right now. So stay tuned for pricing information and more, closer to the new Equinox's on-sale date in spring of 2017. (trunk slams)
