It may not look like it, but this is the entry level McLaren, the GT. This is the daily driver-friendly vehicle. The one that's comfortable. It's your 203 mile-an-hour grocery-getter.
And it differentiates itself in two main ways versus other McLarens. It has very unique styling, compared with others. It's longer than the 720S and it sits higher off the ground for more road clearance. And it also has a 612-horsepower trunk. Okay, trunks don't have horsepower ratings. But here, you have a unique carbon fiber cell that allowed McLaren to put a cargo area on top of the engine. So, I brought out the luggage that I normally carry with on a couple vacation: our large roller, our carry-on duffel bag, some backpacks. And it's grossly out of place getting put in this car, I know. Definitely not enough embroidered luggage or Bridge of Weir leather on my luggage. Also, these things. Not totally familiar, but I think you chase a little white ball around all afternoon with them. McLaren says it should fit this. So, we're gonna put it in and see how well it does. (upbeat music) Are we making the most uninteresting McLaren video ever? I think we might be. (upbeat music) I actually didn't think we'd be able to fit everything in the car, including the golf clubs, but there's also a sizeable front trunk that fit the carry-on and the two backpacks, which was nice. And then, the larger roller fit behind the seat. Golf clubs here, duffle bag back there. Overall, I was surprised that everything fit. The bummer is that the larger roller, the only place it would fit is right behind the back seat, and that blocks visibility. Double bummer because visibility is a big part of why this car is better than other supercars. It actually has very, very good visibility, natural visibility. There's plenty of glass, and that's afforded by the carbon fiber cockpit, of course. So, it is a bummer to lose that with this cargo test. As for other characteristics that would make a good grand touring sports car, I've driven the GT on two occasions now and my body and back just don't like these seats. After an hour, my lower back wanted more support and it started to get sore. There's also no Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And the native maps had me in a field when I was in fact on a road. Even right now, it's showing me in a location that I am not. There are slots for phones, but they're not conducive to using the phone for navigation or while you're driving. A dedicated phone holder will be a must with this car. Also, for all the sound deadening that was added, this is still a loud car with lots of road noise. The McLaren GT may be the ultimate grand touring McLaren, but perhaps not the ultimate grand touring car. (upbeat music)
