Add-ons to a pickup truck's bed.

(guitar starts playing) Hi, I'm Bill Jackson, I managed the buying guides for cars.com, and today we're going to talk about pickup trucks, specifically the beds. They put a lot more features in there over the past few years.
And so we're going to take this Nissan Titan and show you a lot of them. We'll start with the tailgate. In the old days, tailgates were heavy, they were loud, They made a terrible noise when they opened, and they bounced around a lot. These days, (latch clicks and tailgate lowers quietly) it's just not the case. Also, they've gone a long way to making them easier to close. (tailgate slams shut) But a lot of that depends, I guess, on how strong you are. One of the other things that truck makers thought about is if you're carrying long loads, they're starting to build bed extenders into the truck. Here, we have a simple one. (extender bangs gently as its put into place) It just flips over. Another thing they're all doing is: because of the tracks that you see along the side of the bed, you can adjust the length depending on how long the cargo is. Obviously, anytime you're carrying something in the bed, you want to secure it. Of course you don't have to carry a long item for bed extender to be useful. A small bag like this can go right here, (tailgate bangs as it is shut) obviously secure it, but then it keeps it from banging around inside the bed. One feature that this Titan has are these rails that run the length of the bed. And what that lets you do is take one of the cleats that Nissan provides. (cleat clicks into place) Place them in the rails, (cleat clangs gently) decide where your cargo is going to be, (cleat slides along metal track) tighten them down, (metal screw fastening) and you have a flexible way to secure the cargo. Now, obviously you need to check to make sure that what you're carrying doesn't exceed the limit of the cleats, but you get the idea. Now, even if you don't go for a truck, that's got the built-in rails and fancy stuff, one thing that a lot of truck makers are doing is they're putting static cleats here, here, and then in the back in the bed to help you secure loads. One thing that a lot of truck makers are starting to do is build in storage into the beds. Honda has a trunk in the back of their bed that you can use as a cooler or something. Then what Nissan came up with was this little storage hole right here. (latch unlocks quietly) It's not super deep, but you could find a use for it. (guitar playing in the background) One thing to keep in mind with all these accessories is whether they're standard or optional, or if you have to buy a more expensive truck to get them, or if it's even a dealer installed option. So, it's worth it to do some homework before you go to the dealer lots. Good place to look for that is the buying guides at cars.com.
