What does it mean for a car to be most American, and how would you even go about trying to figure that out? Well, that's the purpose of cars.c
om's American Made Index, a data-driven analysis done in-house of which new cars on sale right now are most American. The point of our index is to help shoppers see beyond the hood badge, to more critically measure which cars have the strongest impact on the US economy. To create the AMI, cars.com analyzes five primary factors, location of final assembly, percentage of US and Canadian parts, country of origin for both available engines and available transmissions, and US manufacturing employees relative to the automaker's footprint. We look at every light duty vehicle sold in this country, which was about 400 this year. We troll through data and visit dealerships to see what window stickers on the ground have to say. We verify what we find with automakers, and when it's all said and done, we end up with a final ranked order, topped for 2025 by this, the Tesla Model 3. But no matter the ranking, making our index at all matters because it shows how these cars positively impact our economy. Now, wanna know where a car you're shopping for is on the list or wondering why a car you're interested in is missing? To see the entire 2025 American Made Index, you could sit here and wait for me to tell you, or you could check it out for yourself at cars.com/ami.
