(car engine revving) Racing enthusiasts remember McLaren automotive as a small British racing company, but they have a new sports series. Which they say embodies everyday practicality.
I don't know about you, but it's not everyday you have doors that open like this. (electronic music) What we here is the 570S that's a 562 horsepower mid engine turbo, V8, exotic car on a carbon fiber chassis. I got to say, if that is everyday practicality for you, then every day is a pretty damn good day. Now McLaren claims that the 570S goes to 60 miles an hour in just a tick over three seconds. And I got to say in our quick drive of it so far, there's no reason to doubt that that's the case. Acceleration is just blistering above about 3, 4,000 RPM. This thing revs like absolute craziness. The other predominant impression we have was steering. Steering's really, really good at higher speeds. You turn the wheel just a few degrees and notice it immediately changes direction. And from that, you'd expect the car to be very hard to steer at low speeds, with very little power assist, but that's actually not the case. Remarkably livable on that front. Not that the 570S is particularly easy to maneuver in tight spaces. You're just so low to the ground here. It's hard to get a sense of where the cars' four corners are. Now, there is a backup camera. It goes on this very tall narrow multimedia system. I got to say Supercars not generally known for having user-friendly multimedia systems. The McLaren's one actually seems pretty easy to use at first glance here. Easy to kind of toggle between different menus. Zoom in and out on the map. A lot of kind of interesting premium luxury features in this car. Things like dual zone automatic climate control, a power tilt telescoping steering wheel. Obviously a lot of leather wrapped handles around you. Doesn't take long to figure out that you're in a super car though. Obviously very very tightly confined seats. They don't recline. They only move forward and backward. So the 570S packed plenty of thrills but really how good is it as a daily driver? I don't know. I think we're going to need some more seat time like a lot more seat time. To find out. (electronic music)
