(high energy techno music) Shopping for a used car can be a little trickier than shopping for a new one. If you aren't careful, you can end up with a car that gives you enough problems to make you a regular at your local mechanic.
Want to avoid that? Well, here are some warning signs that should set off red flags while you're shopping. The first warning sign, a shady seller. For private parties, always ask why they're trying to sell the car. If they can't give you a good reason, they might just be trying to unload their troubles. Finally, if they're just uncomfortable with you taking the car to a third-party mechanic, it's time to move on. When you see the car, watch out for these warning signs. The first one, rust, which can be expensive to repair and nearly impossible to reverse. Rust isn't just on the visible parts of the car. Bring a flashlight with you or in a pinch use the light on your phone and check the underside of the car for rust, including areas like the wheel wells, the muffler, and the exhaust system. Check the tires, see how much tread is left and if there's uneven wear between the left and the right tires which can be a sign of an alignment problem. And if the tires are bald, well, that's just downright dangerous. Check the fluid levels. If a car is low on oil, it could mean the owner neglected to do a lot of other maintenance, too. Finally, take a test drive. That alone can reveal even more warning signs. If the car doesn't track straight when you take your hands off the wheel or the brake pedal pulsates, or the engine just makes odd, strange noises, it's possible or even likely the car hasn't been very well maintained.
