CARS.COM — Just seven months after BMW introduced the blistering new M2, the 2 Series on which it’s based gets some updates for 2017. With them comes a change in signage: The 228i becomes the 230i, while the M235i becomes the M240i.
There’s more power to match. The 2017 M240i’s turbocharged six-cylinder makes 335 horsepower and 369 pounds-feet of torque, up 15 hp and 39 pounds-feet versus the 2016 M235i. BMW says it hits 60 mph in 4.2 to 4.7 seconds, depending on configuration. That’s a few tenths of a second quicker than the M235i, and it makes the M240i among BMW’s quickest cars short of any full-on M models.
The 2017 230i’s turbo four-cylinder, meanwhile, makes 248 hp and 258 pounds-feet of torque. That’s up 8 hp and 3 pounds-feet versus the 2016 228i. BMW didn’t provide any acceleration figures, but the outgoing 228i is no slouch; BMW says it hits 60 mph in the mid-5-second range.
Like before, the 2 Series will come in an array of configurations: rear- or all-wheel drive, coupe or convertible body styles, and eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmissions. BMW says the manual has automatic rev matching, while the M240i’s automatic gets a wider gear spread for 2017 to help fuel efficiency.
Expect pricing closer to the 2017 2 Series’ on-sale date this summer.
