Add Volkswagen to the list of automakers planning to offer a connected-car app to allow users to operate certain functions of their VW via their new Apple Watch. Porsche, which is owned by VW, and BMW already announced their vehicle-compatible watch apps, but VW’s seems more comprehensive in terms of which vehicles will be able to use it.

Syncing with VW’s Car-Net platform, Volkswagen owners with an Apple Watch will be able to use the same features that they were able to control via a smartphone and web-based apps, such as remote lock and unlock; viewing status of doors, windows and sunroof; and activating the horn and lights. It even provides map directions to your car.

A geofencing feature will enable alerts to the Watch if the car exceeds a set speed or predetermined geographical boundary, which is useful for households with new teenage drivers and anxious parents. You’ll be able to check the fuel level in gas and diesel VWs; owners of electric VWs can check charge level, estimated driving range, activate or deactivate charging, and activate climate control features.

While Porsche and BMW have limited the models the Apple Watch app is compatible with, VW’s program is compatible with 2014 and later Beetle, CC, Eos, Jetta, Passat and Tiguan models (depending on trim), and on all trim levels for 2015 Golf, GTI, Golf SportWagen and e-Golf models.
