Full-size, truck-based, gas-guzzling SUVs are all dinosaurs to a certain extent since falling out of fashion after their ’90s heyday, but having gone 14 years between redesigns, the Toyota Sequoia seemed positively prehistoric. However, since the Tundra pickup on which it’s based got a redesign for 2021, Toyota’s big SUV named after a big tree is back for 2023, overhauled and ready to compete in the smaller, more specialized supersized SUV segment. Naturally, we wanted to see how the all-new Sequoia stacks up to a brethren behemoth that has kept up with the times, namely the 2022 Ford Expedition.

The big news is the elimination of the V-6 engine option, as all non-hybrid Highlanders will now be powered by a turbo 2.4-liter four-cylinder, which the automaker promises will offer similar capabilities.
