It seems to be happening all the time in the auto industry. A manufacturer just isn’t happy with its vehicles’ names, especially when it wants to add new, additional models to the lineup.
Mercedes-Benz is the latest to do the ole name switcheroo in advance of this year’s auto show season. While the company’s sedans will continue as-is, that can’t be said of its SUV and sports car lineup.
As the image above illustrates, the SUV lineup sees three new names.
The large GL three-row SUV becomes the GLS
The midsized ML two-row SUV becomes the GLE
The compact GLK becomes the GLC
The sporty new GLA remains the GLA
On the sports car front the SL roadster will continue, while the smaller SLK will now be the SLC.
One more naming note: The company will unveil a high-end sedan based on the S 600 next week at the Los Angeles Auto Show with the name Mercedes-Maybach instead of Mercedes-Benz.
The name changes will likely occur over the next model year as updates are made to many of the SUVs. The 2015 models are currently on sale under the old nomenclature.
