Both the gas-only and hybrid models earned five stars in NHTSA’s rollover and side impact crash tests, and four stars in frontal crash testing. Each model also includes as standard equipment all four of NHTSA’s recommended safety technologies: forward collision warning, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking and braking assistance tied to AEB.

The 2020 gas-only Sonata is also an IIHS 2020 Top Safety Pick, that agency’s second-highest rating, though it missed out on the higher designation, Top Safety Pick Plus, because its standard headlights did not earn a high enough rating.

The 2020 Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, including hybrid versions, also earned five-star ratings from NHTSA, as did the 2020 Nissan Altima, though only the Camry also has the recommended safety features as standard.
