Which should you buy, 2019 or 2020? 2020, thanks to the addition of standard safety features for a modest price increase
Nissan’s subcompact “SUV” — that’s in quotation marks because the Kicks doesn’t offer the key SUV ingredient of all-wheel drive — gets just a few meaningful changes for the 2020 model year, but one is a doozy: Safety Shield 360, what Nissan calls its safety technology package, is now standard on all models.

Buyers will be able to purchase a Kicks S for just under $20,000 that includes automatic forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, reverse automatic braking, blind spot warning, lane departure warning and high-beam assist. Standard on the higher SV and SR trim levels for 2020 is Nissan’s Rear Door Alert system designed to help drivers remember not to leave anything — or anyone — in the backseat.
All Kicks models are powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that’s good for 122 horsepower and 114 pounds-feet of torque; it comes paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission. Buyers can choose paint options that include five two-tone color schemes for a little added fun.
As we mentioned, the starting price for a 2020 Kicks S is less than $20,000, coming in at $19,965. The mid-level SV model will cost $21,595, and the range-topping SR model will be priced from $22,215 (all prices include the $1,095 destination fee).
