For the 2020 model year, Toyota has made some changes to the perennially popular Tacoma mid-size pickup truck. Although this isn’t a full-on redo and a lot of these changes seem minor, there’s still plenty of new stuff to check out on the 2020 Toyota Tacoma, and we headed off-road to blisteringly hot north Texas to put the truck to the test.

On the outside, there are some new grilles and some new headlights, depending on trim level. All trims get new taillights. The ultimate off-road model, the TRD Pro, can be had with accessories like a dust snorkel. The TRD also has a new color: Army Green replaces last year’s eye-popping shade of blue.

Mechanically, the Tacoma stays the same this year, but it does get a safety-system update, with the Safety Sense P system now standard across the Tacoma lineup. It features an automatic emergency braking system with pedestrian detection, high-speed cruise control and lane departure warning, among other features.

What’s it like to drive? We spent all our Tacoma time getting dirty with the TRD Pro model — so be sure to watch the video below from Cars.com sister site PickupTrucks.com to find out what it can do.
