The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer made a surprise debut on the first day of the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show. It wasn’t a secret that Chevrolet would be reviving the Trailblazer as a small SUV, but we didn’t expect to see it so soon. As the SUV’s details were revealed, the Trailblazer’s appeal continued to grow.
The 2021 Trailblazer straddles the subcompact and compact SUV classes. It’s big enough for a small family but not so big that it can’t handle the constraints of city life. The 2021 Kia Seltos, which also debuted at the L.A. show, is of a similar vein. In both vehicles, I found plentiful cargo room and a backseat that was large enough to comfortably fit my 6-foot frame — with a few inches of space between my knees and the seatback. Backseat headroom was also ample, and the Trailblazer on display featured the available panoramic moonroof, which opens up the cabin even more.

With the Trailblazer’s 40/60-split, folding rear seats down, there’s 54.4 cubic feet of cargo room, and the SUV also has a fold-flat front passenger seat that accommodates items up to 8.5 feet long. The Seltos offers 62.8 cubic feet of rear cargo area with the rear seats folded, but Chevrolet hasn’t shared rear cargo numbers for behind the backseat.
On the safety front, the Trailblazer adds a suite of standard safety features, an area where Chevrolet and GM have lagged behind other automakers. Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning and Chevy’s Teen Driver system are among the standard safety features. This is a big step in the right direction for Chevrolet.
What stands out most about the Trailblazer is its price: The small SUV will start at less than $20,000, though adding the yet-unknown destination charge could push it above $20,000. That means the Trailblazer undercuts the Seltos, which Kia says will start at less than $22,000.
The reborn Trailblazer arrives at dealerships in the spring of 2020.
