2021 Land Rover Defender Lineup Adds X-Dynamic, Finally Makes Defender 90 Available

Land Rover made one heck of a splash with the introduction of the next-generation Defender SUV at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show, but models have been slow to show up at dealers in the U.S. — in fact, we have yet to even drive one ourselves. But despite this slow and limited rollout, Land Rover has released details of what’s coming for the 2021 model year, where we’ll see a new trim level in the lineup and (finally) the arrival of the three-door Defender 90 to the New World’s shores.

The totally loaded First Edition is still around, however; it’s just augmented by the new X-Dynamic trim level that slots between the base Defender and Defender X trims. It will be available on both the Defender 90 three-door short-wheelbase SUV and the longer five-door Defender 110.

The New X-Dynamic

To further stratify the Defender lineup, there will be several specification packages available: S, SE and HSE. They augment the trim levels of base (aka Core), X-Dynamic, First Edition and X. These correspond with different looks and interior treatments.

The new X-Dynamic model will have gloss-painted Narvik Black exterior door and wheel arch cladding with Silicon Satin painted skid plates and other exterior parts. Inside, the X-Dynamic model will get some unique interior decor — Robustec textile on the seat ribbons, console and other areas that are subject to more wear than others. Several interior parts are powder-coated and will be the standard light gray for the new X-Dynamic model, with an option of white for those exposed metal parts. 

The rest of the Defender lineup carries over unchanged. A choice of two powertrains remains: either a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 296 horsepower and 295 pounds-feet of torque (the P300), or a mild-hybrid turbocharged inline-six cylinder engine making 395 hp and 406 pounds-feet of torque (the P400). 

The chassis is a unibody design with a fully independent suspension featuring standard coil springs on the Defender 90 and optional electronic air springs, which are standard on the Defender 90 X and Defender 90 First Edition as well as the Defender 110.

The Configurable Terrain Response system debuts on the Defender and augments the state-of-the-art Terrain Response 2 all-wheel-drive system, which adds the Wade program, allowing the Defender to do just that — through streams and rivers while providing camera views that allow drivers to judge the depths of surrounding waters. Seating options are available for five, six or seven occupants depending on the model and configuration.
