To qualify, the luxury mid-size SUV scored good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front and original moderate overlap front tests, as well as an acceptable rating in the updated side test, which got more difficult for 2023.

The XC60 also comes with a standard front crash prevention system that earned a superior rating in the daytime evaluation, as the SUV’s automatic emergency braking system helped it avoid hitting pedestrians in several different scenarios at 12 mph, 25 mph and 37 mph. At night, the system earned an advanced rating, one below superior. Lastly, all trims are equipped with acceptable-rated LED reflector headlights.

However, the SUV missed out on the agency’s top award, Top Safety Pick Plus. It didn’t earn a good rating in the updated side test.
