Volkswagen is celebrating 40 years of the Jetta GLI stateside by limiting production of the 40th Anniversary Edition to just 1,984 units — 1984 being the first year the GLI was sold. All are earmarked for the U.S., and the 2024 model’s $29,235 price tag undercuts the current cheapest 2023 Jetta GLI trim, the Autobahn, by $3,445.
The 40th Anniversary Edition will be available in three colors: gray, white and blue. All wear black 18-inch wheels, mirrors and door handles, as well as a black lip spoiler and grille. The special edition also features the GLI’s trademark red accents on the grille, lower fascia and brake calipers.
Occupants sit in seats embossed with a geometric pattern that VW says is unique in every vehicle, “like a one-of-a-kind fingerprint.” Other filigrees adorn the cupholders, seat tags, steering wheel and front door sills. It’s not all cosmetics, though: The 40th Anniversary Edition comes equipped with VW’s electronically controlled limited-slip differential, brake-based torque vectoring, adaptive dampers and a sport exhaust. The 2024 Jetta GLI 40th Anniversary Edition will arrive at dealerships later in the summer.
GLI prices have increased slightly since the start of the pandemic and its related bottlenecks in the global supply chain, though the sole trim level available since the 2022 model year has been the well-equipped Autobahn. VW has yet to make any announcements about the full Jetta GLI lineup for 2024, but this seems to be a likely indicator that more affordable trim levels will return soon.
