Jeep parent automaker Stellantis is recalling more than 32,000 Wrangler 4xe and Wrangler Unlimited 4xe plug-in hybrid SUVs over the threat of fire. An internal company investigation has discovered eight vehicle fires thus far.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2021-22 Wrangler Unlimited 4xes and model-year 2023-24 Wrangler 4xes (following a rebranding). The investigation determined that all eight vehicles were parked and turned off, with six of them connected to chargers. The automaker deems the vehicles safe to drive, noting it isn’t aware of any related accidents or injuries and that 1% of affected vehicles may have the defect. However, it advises owners to avoid recharging them and to park away from other structures and vehicles until the remedy has been performed.
The fix for the issue involves a software flash, but if a certain error code appears, the battery pack will need to be replaced. Owners will be notified by Stellantis when they may schedule service, but for more information on recalls in the meantime, they can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
