3,300 BMW X3, X4, 3 Series, 8 Series: Recall Alert

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 3,300 model-year 2020 BMW X3, X3 M, X4 and X4 M SUVs; 3 Series sedans; and 8 Series coupes and convertibles

The Problem: The sensors in the front seat belt buckles may inaccurately detect a belted occupant as unbelted, possibly causing the airbag and seat belt pretensioners to deploy improperly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

The Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the front seat belt buckles, as necessary, for free.

What Owners Should Do: BMW will begin notifying owners May 11. BMW owners can call the automaker at 800-525-7417, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
