As demand for electric vehicles soars, automakers are scrambling to keep up and having to make some tough choices amid parts and labor supply issues. Ford announced in January that it’s increasing production of its upcoming F-150 Lighting electric pickup truck as a result, but Tuesday, it announced the opposite for its Mustang Mach-E electric SUV.

According to a note posted on the vehicle’s order site, the 2022 Mustang Mach-E can no longer be ordered. “Due to high demand, the current model year is no longer available for retail order. Limited inventory may be available at selected dealers. Contact your dealer for more information.”
This isn’t the first time Ford has closed orders for the 2022 Mustang Mach-E. The automaker previously announced that model-year 2022 Premium and California Route 1 versions were no longer available for order, also due to high demand.
It’s no surprise that demand is high given the country’s recent gas price spike and the Mach-E’s solid specs as an efficient and affordable EV. Its maximum EPA-estimated 314-mile range (for the no-longer-available California Route 1 with rear-wheel drive) impressed, as did its ample power, earning the Mach-E a runner up spot on Cars.com’s Best Electric Vehicle of 2022 award list.
Prior to this most recent setback, Ford had big plans for Mach-E sales. In 2021, the automaker said it hoped to reach 200,000-plus units per year in 2023, with the longer-term goal of scaling up to build about 600,000 EVs a year by the start of 2024.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Ford is shifting production plans to be able to get the Mustang Mach-E back on track. The paper is reporting that Ford plans to use its entire Cuautitlan, Mexico, stamping and assembly plant for Mach-E production and will increase production later in 2022 on model-year 2023 vehicles. A Ford spokesman told the paper that the automaker planned to add another EV to the plant, but that plan has changed.
Ford’s current EV lineup includes the Mach-E, F-150 Lightning and E-Transit van. The automaker said its developing electrification strategy is a core component of its goal to achieve carbon neutrality globally by 2050.
