Though Ford has made a big show of its pivot to SUVs in recent years, its Transit Connect van has quietly soldiered on in the lineup for those with bigger families and more stuff to haul at a lower price than an Expedition can handle. Unfortunately, it’s now getting attention for less desirable reasons: The automaker has issued a recall for more than 192,000 of the vans over a transmission-related component.

At risk are model-year 2013-21 Transit Connects with 2.5-liter engine and 6F35 transmission. In affected vehicles, the bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach. A damaged or missing bushing could prevent the shifter from moving the transmission to the intended gear, increasing the risk of a crash. Ford said it isn’t aware of any related reports of accidents or injuries.
To resolve the problem, dealers will replace the under-hood shifter bushing and add a protective cap over the shifter cable bushing for free. Ford will begin notifying owners June 28.
