Ford’s latest major recall affects nearly 522,000 of its popular Escape and Bronco Sport mid-size SUVs. The issue involves a fuel leak inside the engine compartment.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2020-23 Escapes and model-year 2021-23 Bronco Sports equipped with 1.5-liter engines. The issue is with the fuel injector, which may crack and leak; as a result, fuel or fuel vapor may accumulate near a hot surface on the engine or around exhaust components, potentially causing ignition and an underhood fire, increasing the risk of injury.
To resolve the issue, dealers will update the engine control software to include fuel injector leak detection and install a drain tube for free. Ford will begin notifying owners Dec. 19, but those with further questions can call Ford at 866-436-7332 (Ford’s number for this recall is 22S73), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
