A faulty fuel pump inside the fuel tank is the source of a new recall for more than 628,000 Honda and Acura cars, minivans, pickup trucks and SUVs that affects nearly the entire model-year 2019 lineup, as well as a handful of 2018 and 2020 models.

For Honda, this includes model-year 2019 Accord Hybrid sedans; Civic and Civic Si coupes and sedans; Civic Type R and Fit hatchbacks; HR-V, Passport and Pilot SUVs; Ridgeline pickups; model-year 2019-20 Accord sedans, Civic hatchbacks, and Insight sedans and hatchbacks; and model-year 2018-19 CR-V SUVs. For Acura, Honda’s luxury arm, the recall includes the model-year 2019 ILX sedan and model-year 2019-20 MDX, MDX Hybrid and RDX SUVs and TLX sedans.
The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may contain defective impellers and fail, which could cause an engine stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Honda said it has received no related reports of crashes or injuries.
The fix is simple: Dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly for free. Honda will begin notifying owners May 18, but those with further questions can call the automaker at 888-234-2138, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
