Jeep just released our first look at the upcoming redesigned 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee — in its plug-in hybrid form, called 4xe. The move came as part of EV Day, a series of announcements laying out electrification plans for Stellantis, Jeep’s newly formed parent automaker.
Besides the obvious fact that it will be a plug-in hybrid, we don’t have many other details about the new Grand Cherokee, 4xe or otherwise. In terms of looks, we’re seeing styling cues from the Grand Cherokee L — a new, three-row version of the SUV — on what appears to be the size of the current two-row Grand Cherokee. If the new Grand Cherokee’s proportions stay roughly the same as the previous generation’s, it will be about 2 feet shorter than the Grand Cherokee L.
As for other details, it seems likely the updated interior Jeep gave the Grand Cherokee L will appear in its two-row sibling, but without the third row. Powertrain details haven’t been announced, either, though Jeep has announced them for the Grand Cherokee L, and it seems unlikely those would differ much for the Grand Cherokee. As for the 4xe’s PHEV powertrain, Jeep could use the one from the Wrangler 4xe, which makes 375 total system horsepower and 470 pounds-feet of torque.
Jeep will officially unveil the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee at the 2021 New York International Auto Show in August, so stay tuned for more details as that event approaches.
