As surely as the moon follows the sun through the sky, the launch of a new Audi SUV preludes a slant-roofed Sportback version of the same. Electrification isn’t changing that. The mid-size Q6 e-Tron and sportier SQ6 e-Tron launched this past winter and are now being joined in showrooms by the Q6 and SQ6 Sportback e-Tron, which start at $70,895 and $77,595, respectively (all prices include $1,295 destination charge).

Powertrain Specs and Range

Other than their rooflines and interior volumes, the biggest difference between the regular and Sportback electric SUVs is that the former is available with a single motor driving just the rear wheels; Audi is offering the Sportbacks only with two electric motors and all-wheel drive. Buyers will pay between $2,400 and $5,800 more for the Sportback than they do for the regular Q6 e-Tron, depending on trim level.

In the Q6 Sportback e-Tron Quattro, the two motors combine to produce 456 horsepower; output increases to 509 hp in the SQ6. Both use the same 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack (with 94.4 kWh usable capacity) as their traditionally topped siblings. However, that sloped roof is good for more than just appearances: It’s more aerodynamic. The Q6 Sportback has an EPA-rated range of 319 miles, an improvement of 12 miles over the regular SUV with AWD. The SQ6 Sportback’s EPA-rated 283-mile range is a smaller improvement of just 8 miles over its roomier counterpart. Able to charge at up to 270 kilowatts, the Q6 Sportback e-Trons can replenish their batteries from 10% to 80% in as little as 21 minutes on a DC fast charger, per Audi.

Trim Levels

The entry-level Premium trim for the Q6 Sportback e-Tron rides on 19-inch wheels and features LED headlights and taillights, a panoramic moonroof and a power liftgate. Inside it boasts leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power-adjustable steering wheel, ambient lighting, three-zone automatic climate control and Audi’s “virtual cockpit,” which consists of an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch touchscreen. Standard safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and automatic high beams. A 360-degree camera system is optional.

Upgrading to Premium Plus nets buyers a heated steering wheel, upgraded ambient lighting, heated rear seats, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system. The Prestige trim level adds an adaptive air suspension, 10.9-inch front-passenger touchscreen and seven selectable lighting signatures. The 360-degree camera system and a head-up display are standard on the Q6 Premium Plus and above.

All SQ6’s ride on a sport-tuned adaptive air suspension and 20-inch wheels. They also feature massaging front seats, metal pedals and carbon-fiber interior trim, but they’re otherwise equipped largely the same as their Q6 counterparts. The Premium Plus upgrades to a Bang & Olufsen sound system with head restraint speakers, and the SQ6 Prestige adds organic light-emitting diode taillights.
