A damaged trunk latch may prevent the opening of the trunk from the inside, which could be a safety concern for anyone who finds themselves locked in. Affected vehicles from Hyundai include the model-year 2018-20 Accent sedan; model-year 2016-17 Azera sedan; model-year 2017-18 Sonata sedan; and model-year 2016-18 Sonata Hybrid sedan. Affected Kias include the model-year 2016-18 Forte sedan; model-year 2016-18 Forte Koup coupes; and model-year 2018-19 Rio sedan.

The fix is straightforward for both brands: Dealers will replace the trunk latch assembly for free. Hyundai will begin notifying owners Oct. 1, Kia Oct. 5; those with additional questions can call Hyundai at 855-371-9460, Kia at 800-333-4542, or visit NHTSA’s website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
