Hyundai Plans New Fuel-Cell Car, Autonomous Tech for CES

CARS.COM — Hyundai is starting the new year off with a look into the future. The automaker announced today that it will unveil its next-generation hydrogen-powered vehicle- as well as new self-driving technology — next week at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Hyundai announced that it’s partnering with Aurora, an autonomous-vehicle technology development company, to bring self-driving Hyundai cars to market by 2021. (Volkswagen also announced a partnership with Aurora and a 2025 deadline for a fully autonomous vehicle.)

Hyundai says that to start, its partnership with Aurora will focus on developing hardware and software for automated and autonomous driving for Level 4 automation, which is defined by SAE International as a vehicle that can operate without human input or oversight under select conditions.

The new fuel-cell vehicle will be used to test the implementation of the partnership’s autonomous driving systems — one of which, the Intelligent Personal Cockpit, the automaker will showcase at CES. Hyundai says the display will feature artificial-intelligence-enhanced voice recognition and vital-sign-based wellness care.

Along with a closer look at Hyundai’s next-generation fuel-cell vehicle, the automaker will also showcase its hydrogen-powered applications in the home, in a booth dedicated to the Hydrogen Life Vision.
