If you’ve been flipping back and forth between Hyundai’s and Kia’s electric vehicle lineups and wondering where the former’s version of the EV9 is, your answer is here. Well, it’ll be here in November, when Hyundai promises to pull the wraps off the Ioniq 9 it teased today.
For now, the Korean automaker is providing few details, only confirming that the Ioniq 9 will be an electric three-row SUV. It seems a safe bet to expect its battery pack and electric motors will be the same as those employed in Kia’s electric three-row SUV, meaning a 76.1-kilowatt-hour battery pack in the base version and a 99.8-kWh pack in higher trims. The EV9 is available with a 201- or 215-horsepower electric motor on the rear axle or with motors front and rear combining for a total of 379 hp and all-wheel drive. Range estimates in the Kia go from a low of 230 miles on a charge to 304.
Keep It ‘Aerosthetic’
Hyundai calls the Ioniq 9’s design “Aerosthetic,” which it says “is a unique blend of aerodynamic performance and aesthetic appeal.” The brand says it “draws inspiration from the sleek exteriors and spacious, cozy interiors of boats.” What the Ioniq 9 looks like to us is an EV9 as interpreted by Hyundai’s design team — the one responsible for the elegant curves on the Palisade, not the Minecrafters who blocked out the new Santa Fe. There is, however, a hint of the Santa Fe’s rectilinearity in the taillights, which borrow the H-shaped design from the Santa Fe’s elements but apply it to the bumper-to-roof dimensions of the Cadillac Escalade’s marquee-sized lenses.
Beyond that, we’ll have to wait to see the Ioniq 9 in the metal. Hyundai will release more details on the new EV when it is officially unveiled in November.
