CARS.COM — With top scores in all dynamic crash tests and the collision avoidance system test, the redesigned 2016 Toyota Prius garnered the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s highest designation, Top Safety Pick Plus. The Prius scored good in IIHS’s small- and moderate-overlap frontal tests, as well as the agency’s side-impact, roof strength, and head restraint and seating evaluations. (IIHS scores are good, acceptable, marginal and poor.) That’s better than the prior-generation Prius, which scored acceptable in the small-overlap frontal test and good elsewhere.
The 2016 Prius’ optional forward collision warning system with automatic emergency braking also received top marks, an additional factor for Top Safety Pick Plus status. You only can get the system on higher Prius trim levels, but that could change soon, as Toyota recently announced plans to make forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking standard on almost its entire lineup by model-year 2018.
IIHS has not conducted its new headlight test on the Prius. Note that the Prius v, a related but separate model, has headlight results, but those don’t apply to the regular Prius — in the same way the 2016 Prius’ crash tests do not apply to the Prius c or Prius v models.
