Both software and hardware are at the heart of Kia’s latest recall of more than 410,500 vehicles, which could lead to the serious safety consequence of airbags not deploying.

At risk are model-year 2017 Forte Koup coupes; model-year 2017-18 Forte sedans; and model-year 2017-19 Sedona minivans and Soul and Soul EV hatchbacks. The issue involves the airbag control unit cover, which may contact a memory chip on the printed circuit board and damage the electrical circuit. Such circuit damage may result in deactivating airbags, causing them to not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
To resolve the issue, dealers will inspect the airbag control unit, then either update the software or replace the unit, as necessary. All repairs will be done for free, and Kia will begin notifying owners March 21. Those with additional questions can call the automaker at 800-333-4542, or visit NHTSA’s website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
